Story 01From accountancy to business ownership
One woman I coached had worked in accountancy for many years but no longer enjoyed the profession. During our conversations, she expressed how much she enjoyed the customer service side of her work.
I recognised her natural ability to communicate with customers, build relationships and support people. We explored using those strengths to provide customer relationship services for accountancy firms. She went on to build a business supporting accountants with their customers.
The lessonSometimes the opportunity you're looking for exists within the experience you've already gained. You need to consider how else you might apply it.
Story 02From personal interest to purposeful leadership
Another person I supported had a longstanding interest in homelessness and helping people experiencing difficult circumstances. I encouraged him to recognise his communication strengths and consider establishing a charity.
He initially lacked confidence in approaching social services and other organisations. With encouragement and practical guidance, he began moving forward, and subsequently established a homelessness charity.
The lessonYour interests, strengths and experiences sometimes point towards opportunities you haven't seriously considered.
Story 03A conversation remembered nearly 18 years later
While at university, I led a group of students from different backgrounds and experiences. I worked with each person to recognise their strengths, identify where they wanted to progress and contribute to the group's success.
Nearly 18 years later, one former colleague contacted me to reflect on the difference those conversations had made.
“None of us had the same background or experiences. But you coming in and coaching us all, it created like amazing results.”— Jamila, former client
